Opinion: Yoko Ono makes space for women’s testimonies at the Vancouver Art Gallery

"These are the last days of the Yoko Ono: Growing Freedom exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The exhibition includes a growing installation that Ono started in 2013 named “Arising.”

The installation displays the responses to Ono’s call inviting “women of all ages, from all countries of the world” to “send a testament of harm done to you, for being a woman.” Along with their statements, women were asked to send a photograph of their eyes only.

While the display format is humble – a few hundred sheets of A4-sized paper hung in lines (and some more in a binder on a stand in the room), each containing an image of a woman’s eyes and accompanying testimony – the overall message and its impact are powerful."

The Vancouver Art Gallery is now accepting submissions from individuals who self-identify as women to be part of an installation in the upcoming exhibition GROWING FREEDOM: The instructions of Yoko Ono and The art of John and Yoko, on view from October 9, 2021, until May 1, 2022.

Visionary artist Yoko Ono invites women of all ages from all over the world to send a testament of harm inflicted on them, for simply being what they are, a woman.

The artist asks that you write your testament in your own language, in your own words and however openly you wish. You may sign your first name if you wish, but do not give your full name. Send a photograph only of your eyes.

All statements of harm and photographs will be exhibited in Ono’s ARISING, an ongoing installation that has been shown internationally.
