Nicolas Berggruen was born in Paris, France, is a US-based billionaire investor and philanthropist.

He is the son of art collector and dealer Heinz Berggruen and actress Bettina Moissi.

He is a dual  American and German citizen. 

Growing up in Paris in the 1970s, Berggruen spent his time reading and discovering the world of philosophy

and most influental books and authors.

He was particularly drawn to the work of French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and interested in political science.

He was  deeply interested in philosophy since his teenage times

and by his life experiences, travels and meeting with contemporary philosophers 

he himself became not just a revolutionary public figure and speaker  but an influental contemporary philosopher himself.

As an art collector Berggruen stated: “Collecting should be guided by your eye, your tastes. It's an intellectual pursuit.

On May 12, 2018, Nicolas Berggruen received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
