Sterling Ruby (born January 21, 1972) is an American artist who works in a large variety of media including ceramics, painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, video, and textiles. Often, his work is presented in large and densely packed installations. The artist has cited a diverse range of sources and influences including aberrant psychologies (particularly schizophrenia and paranoia), urban gangs and graffiti, hip-hop culture, craft, punk, masculinity, violence, public art, prisons, globalization, American domination and decline, waste and consumption. In opposition to the minimalist artistic tradition and influenced by the ubiquity of urban graffiti, the artist's works often appear scratched, defaced, camouflaged, dirty, or splattered. Proclaimed as one of the most interesting artists to emerge this century by New York Times art critic Roberta Smith, Ruby's work examines the psychological space where individual expression confronts social constraint.^[1][2] Sterling Ruby currently lives and works in Los Angeles. His studio is located in Vernon, south of downtown Los Angeles.^[3]

A new multiyear site-specific installation by Sterling Ruby (@sterlingruby), titled "A Project in Four Acts,” will begin this week at the Palazzo Diedo in Venice. The palazzo was recently acquired by the Nicolas Berggruen Charitable Trust and converted into a venue for exhibitions and artist residencies as part of the new Berggruen Arts & Culture initiative.

To bring the palazzo to life during its renovation and make its new role visible to the public, the institution named Ruby as its inaugural artist-in-residence. The first phase of his “A Project in Four Acts” is a relief structure that leans across the façade of the building, which will be visible from April 20 to coincide with the 59th Biennale di Venezia (@labiennale). After buying the Casa dei Tre Oci on Venice’s Giudecca island last year for the institute that bears his name, the investor and philanthropist Nicolas Berggruen announced in March that he had bought another Venetian palazzo, the Palazzo Diedo, to house a new cultural initiative: Berggruen Arts & Culture, which is scheduled to open in 2024.

For now, a piece by the U.S.-based artist Sterling Ruby has been installed on the facade of Palazzo Diedo (best seen from the Sant’Antonio Bridge in front). It is the first of four projects by the artist to mark “the progress of the restoration, so that the palazzo comes alive, it’s already a sign of occupation,” Mario Codognato, the artistic director of Berggruen Arts & Culture, said during a visit to the palazzo earlier this month."
