The Law Faculty is delighted to announce the winner of the Nicolas Berggruen Prize for Best Doctoral Dissertation in Philosophy, Law & Politics at the University of Oxford in 2022.
2022 marks the inaugural year of this prestigious prize, generously funded by Nicolas Berggruen of the Berggruen Institute in Los Angeles. Each year the prize will be awarded to the best dissertation across the three disciplines of philosophy, law and politics that is both excellent and transformative for either the theory or practice in any field of human inquiry. Each of the three faculties (Philosophy, Law and the Department of Politics and International Relations) nominate their most outstanding dissertation each year and then a winner is selected among the three outstanding dissertations by a committee constituted by the terms of the Prize.
The 2022 prize is awarded to Dr Jay Ruckelshaus, for his dissertation “Partisanship, Polarization, and Political Identity”. Ruckelshaus' dissertation explores how partisan polarization distorts the relationship between citizens and politics and the relationships across the citizenry. In response, Ruckelshaus offers a novel account of what citizens of diverse, divided democracies must share.
Dr Ruckelshaus is a Rhodes Scholar, nonprofit leader who helps people with disabilities gain entry into higher education, and an emerging public intellectual with bylines in The New York Times, Governing, and elsewhere see Dr Ruckelshaus’s 2018 BBC profile
On hearing he had won the prize, Jay said:
“I’m incredibly humbled and honored to have been awarded the Nicolas Berggruen prize! The central focus of my work has been the power of ideas in democratic societies, so I feel particularly lucky to be acknowledged by a benefactor and an Institute driving transformative intellectual change. I hope to do my part in developing and – crucially – enacting ideas that help make the world more humane.”

BIOGRAPHY
Nicolas Berggruen is the Chairman of the Berggruen Institute, which addresses fundamental political and cultural questions in our rapidly changing world. Focusing on Great Transformations in the human condition, brought for example by climate change, restructuring of global economics and politics, and advances in science and technology, the Institute seeks to connect deep thought in the human sciences—philosophy and culture—to the pursuit of practical improvements in governance. To this end, Nicolas formed the 21st Century Council, the Council for the Future of Europe and the Think Long Committee for California; all dedicated to the design and implementation of good governance—drawing from practices in both East and West.
Committed to leaving a legacy of art and architecture, he sits on the boards of the Museum Berggruen, Berlin, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He is a member of the International Councils for the Tate Museum, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the President’s International Council for The J. Paul Getty Trust, Los Angeles. He has collaborated on projects with such renowned architects as Richard Meier, Shigeru Ban and David Adjaye; and is presently planning the Institute’s new headquarters in the Santa Monica mountains with Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron and Los Angeles’ Gensler.
Mr. Berggruen is co-author with Nathan Gardels of Renovating Democracy: Governing in the Age of Globalization and Digital Capitalism (University of California Press) and Intelligent Governance for the 21st Century, a Financial Times Book of the Year, and co-publisher of Noema Magazine.
Berggruen was previously a member of the 21st Century Council, Council for the Future of Europe, Globalization and Geopolitics, and Think Long California.
Nicolas Berggruen is also Chairman of Berggruen Holdings, the investment vehicle of the Nicolas Berggruen Charitable Trust.

If I could have dinner with three guests of my choice, who would they be?
God, but that seat may be empty. The devil - easy; we may have shared many meals together already. Interesting and, likely, entertaining.
Also, an angel, yet do they exist?
I may just end up eating with the devil, with both of us hoping that the other two join!

We may have progressed technologically and improved standards of living, yet are we better, more evolved humans?
