As Italo Calvino once wrote, ‘You take delight not in a city’s seven or seventy wonders, but in the answer it gives to a question of yours.’ We see Venice as a gateway for those seeking answers to the most pressing questions and challenges of our time—and La Casa dei Tre Oci as the nexus of the Institute’s work in developing ideas to build a better world. We are deeply grateful to take this step forward with the Fondazione di Venezia in establishing a European presence. We look forward to developing our program at the Tre Oci in the coming years.

The Berggruen Institute is delighted to inaugurate the historic Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice, Italy as our new European center.
As a pre-eminent gateway city where people, ideas, cultural expressions, and economic currents have flowed together and changed the world, our Venice location completes a circle of activities from East to West. La Casa dei Tre Oci: Designed as a private home and studio by the artist Mario De Maria and built on the Giudecca in 1913, the neo-Gothic Casa dei Tre Oci has a long history of hosting artists and intellectuals and serving as a venue for cultural meetings and debates.
Berggruen Prize is an annual $1 million award for major achievements in advancing ideas that shape the world.
Congratulations Public Philosopher Peter Singer prize winner of the Berggruen Prize in 2021.
Peter Singer was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1946, and educated at the University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford. After teaching in England, the United States, and Australia, he has, since 1999, been Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics in the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University. With work that has been translated into more than 25 languages and has been incorporated into legislation in many nations, Singer has had a global impact, extending far beyond the English-speaking world.
