🌿🌿Debut monograph and exhibition of Marie Hazard, Gallerie Mitterrand, Paris 🌿🌿Monograph essay written by art historian Olivier Berggruen🌿🌿 

Marie Hazard’ first monograph (30 printed books) and new works are now on view at the gallery Gallerie Mitterrand.

In the beautifully designed and printed book the modular essay is written by art historian Olivier Berggruen and a conversation with artist George Tiger Liu.

Her debut monograph gathers some one-hundred-and-fifty 

works woven and nine exhibitions made between 2018 and 2022.

« On the surface, Marie Hazard’s weaves are made up of stable entities.

 Yet it is also worth seeing them as extended objects that unfold 

and metamorphosize in time and space. Their fluidity is produced 

by the beholder’s gaze, which reflects their mood, circumstances, 

and closeness to the work, among other conditions. The image

contains the seed of movement by offering perceptual ambiguities 

and the possibility that other, more implicit works exist simultaneously within it ».

Marie Hazard

Textile Artist

Born in Le Havre, France. Lives and works in Paris.

After completing studies at the Atelier de Sèvres in Paris, Marie Hazard went to London to pursue textile design  at Central Saint-Martins.

Her medium of choice is weaving: before taking to her own loom,  she assisted American artist Sheila Hicks, a leading figure of the textile art movement of the 60s. 

Hicks is known for her innovative revival of traditional weaving practices. 

Weaving had long been considered more craft than art, but weaving techniques would enter the vocabulary of contemporary fine art through the work of Bauhaus artists such as Annie Albers, and later, the Arte Povera movement, including the work of Alighiero Boetti.

Olivier Berggruen

Art historian

Born in Switzerland, Olivier Berggruen studied art history at Brown University and at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London

before being appointed Associate Curator at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt. 

He currently lives in New York, continuing his work as a curator and writer with an interest in aesthetics and the philosophy of art.

Apart from various curatorial projects, Olivier Berggruen was involved in a small number of musical events focused on 20th Century and Contemporary music. 

These focus on piano music, ranging from Alexander Scriabin to Unsuk Chin and Helmut Lachenmann.

About The Olivier Berggruen Prize

The prestigious Olivier Berggruen Prize founded by Olivier Berggruen was given this year to an extraordinary pianist talent Pallavi Mahidhara at the 66th edition of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival.

This year in 2022 presented for the first time the Olivier Berggruen Prize given to young pianist Pallavi Mahidhara, who has appeared previously at the festival. 

The trophy for the ‘Olivier Berggruen Prize’ was specially designed by @maithu

On this occasion Mai-Thu Perret created a lovely award, a bronze sculpture of a fox, one of the region’s ubiquitous animals.
